Sesame is a flowering plant in the genus Sesamum, also known as benne. It has one of the highest oil contents of any seed and boasts a rich, nutty flavor, making it a common ingredient in cuisines worldwide. However, like other nuts, it can trigger allergic reactions in some people. Sesame seeds are often added to breads, such as bagels and the tops of hamburger buns. They may also be baked into crackers, often in the form of sticks. In Sicily and France, the seeds are eaten on bread (ficelle sésame, sesame thread), while in Greece, they are used in cakes. Black sesame seeds are especially known for their high antioxidant content and provide a lot of calcium, manganese, and copper.
