Oregano is a flowering plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae). Oregano is related to the medicinal herb marjoram, sometimes called wild marjoram.

Oregano is a culinary herb, used for the aroma of its leaves; when dried, it can be more aromatic than when fresh. Its flavor is aromatic, warm, and slightly bitter, and its intensity can vary.

Today, oregano is most widely used as the main herb in Italian cuisine. It is most often used with oven-baked, fried, or grilled vegetables, meat, and fish. Oregano goes well with the spicy dishes popular in Southern Italy. Dried and ground leaves are most commonly used in Greece to season Greek salads and are often added to a lemon–olive oil dressing served with grilled fish or meat dishes and casseroles.
