Sesame is a flowering plant in the genus Sesamum, also known as benne. It contains one of the highest oil contents of any seed, and its rich, nutty flavor makes it a widely used ingredient in cuisines around the world. Like other nuts, however, it can cause allergic reactions in some people. Sesame seeds are often added to breads, such as bagels and hamburger buns. They can also be baked into crackers, often in the shape of sticks. In Sicily and France, the seeds are eaten on bread (ficelle sésame, sesame braid), but in Greece they are used in cakes. Black sesame seeds are especially known for their high antioxidant content, as well as large amounts of calcium, manganese, and copper.
